Youth agent hired

Michelle Koenig is now on duty as 4-H youth development agent at the Lyon County office of K-State Research and Extension.

Koenig, who began work on June 11, holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from South Dakota State University. Before coming to Emporia, she worked as an office assistant for the university’s chief information technology office in Brookings, S.D., and completed internships with extension offices in Colorado and Minnesota.

Extension agents are jointly employed by the K-State extension office on the Kansas State University campus in Manhattan and the county extension council.

Winning teacher named

A former Emporian who teaches in Olathe has received a Teacher of the Year award from Wal-Mart.

Monica Duncan, ninth-grade teacher at Oregon Trail Junior High School, received a $1,000 grant to her school, a $100 gift card for classroom supplies, a Teacher of the Year polo shirt and a certificate. She also earned the right to compete for further honors at the state and, perhaps, the national level.

Duncan, the daughter of Skip and Jan Evans of Emporia, is married to Richard Duncan, son of Bill and Sherry Duncan of Americus.

Emporian promoted

Don Forrester, son of David and Marianne Dixon of Emporia, has been promoted to Petty Officer 3rd class in the United States Navy.

Martial arts move

Flinthills Martial Arts Center has moved to 727 Commercial St. from 124 Commercial St. The business is owned by George and Lachelle Spencer.

The center offers classes in isshinryu karate, combat hapkido, zumba, dance and gymnastics.
