Each Friday, The Gazette salutes those who make Emporia and the surrounding area a better place to live and work. Give these folks a pat on the back ...
THE REGIONAL Development Association and its many partners for bringing Hill’s Pet Nutrition to town. With three pet food plants, it may soon be a compliment to say Emporia is going to the dogs.
• The National Teachers Hall of Fame, for bringing five more “class acts” to town last week.
• Darwin Sweetman, who got a $10,000 scholarship from Wal-Mart. Sweetman will attend Emporia State University this fall and hopes to become a math teacher at his old high school, Northern Heights.
• Vickie Hayes-Walworth, for five good years at the head of the Emporia Granada Theatre Alliance. Hayes-Walworth, who leaves the post July 6, saw the historic theater through its fund-raising campaign and watched much of its construction happen. See you on opening night, Vickie.
• The Emporia City Commission and Emporia Recreation Commission, who finally approved bids to replace the heating system at the recreation center’s pool. It’s been a long wait for local swimmers, but hopefully a worthwhile one.
• The L-CAT bus system, which offered free rides Thursday as part of “National Dump the Pump Day.”
• Daryl Bolinger, for hanging on to his menu, even if it meant losing the Dairy Queen name. On June 13, the Dairy Queen East became Dari Delight Eats & Treats.
• The Emporia U-18 Energy softball team, which won the ASA Sub-State Tournament in Osage City to qualify for state. The Class B State Championship tournament will be June 29 through July 1 in Topeka.
• The recipients of Emporia Main Street’s annual awards: Town Crier Bookstore (Business of the Year), Kim Redeker (Volunteer of the Year) and Laurie Schmidt, Shawn Honea and Scott Bolley (Advocate Awards). Keep givin’ em the business.
