Suite success
“Plaza Suite,” a comedy by Neil Simon, is the next production in Emporia State University’s summer theatre season. The show is actually three one-act performances, each set in the same suite of the Plaza Hotel. The curtain rises at 7:30 p.m. June 27 through June 30. For tickets, call 341-6378.
Coming up later this season at ESU will be “Perfect Wedding,” July 11 through July 14, and “Gilligan’s Island: The Musical,” July 25 through July 28.
Summer reading and worm races
The Emporia Public Library Summer Preschool and School Age Storytime theme for the week of June 25th is “Nature Mysteries.” Preschool Storytime is Monday and Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m., and on Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. for 2-5 year olds. School Age Storytime is Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. for 5 -11 year olds.
The Pat-A-Cake Club’s and Mother Goose Time Storytime’s theme for the week of June 25th is “I Spy Colors.” Pat-A-Cake Club is held at 9:15 a.m. on Monday and Thursday mornings for infants to 18 months. Mother Goose Time is held at 9:45 a.m. on Monday and Thursday mornings for toddlers up to 36 months. Finally, the Emporia Public Library is hosting its annual Worm & Car Races on Friday, June 29th at 10:00 a.m. Children are invited to bring their worms and/or toy cars to the library courtyard for the races. Come see who has the fastest worm and/or car in
Emporia this summer. Prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers in each event. Please pre-register by telephoning or visiting Children’s Services by Thursday, June 28th.

Live in the Lot
Wednesday’s “Live in the Lot” concert will feature music by Altered to Offer and by Lee Mueller and the Spare Parts. There is no movie this week. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Seventh Avenue and Merchant Street parking lot. The performances are free
Brown Bag
Wednesday’s Brown Bag concert at the Emporia Public Library will feature the Tallgrass Express String Band, performing bluegrass, country, cowboy, Celtic and gospel music.
The performance will be held in the library courtyard and is free. In the event of rain or extreme heat, the show will move inside the library. Seating is limited, so audience members may want to bring their own chairs.
The concert starts at noon and ends at 1 p.m. Lunch items and snacks will be sold by the Dog Gone Brothers and the Sweet Granada. Items for sale will include hot dogs and sausage sandwiches, nachos, root beer and water will be for sale, along with sweet treats.
‘Celebrating with Art’
“Celebrating with Art,” a juried art exhibition sponsored by the Friends of the Emporia Public Library and the Girl Scout Council of the Flint Hills, in partnership with the Emporia Arts Council, will be open to the public July 1-14 at the Emporia Arts Center, 618 Mechanic St. The Girl Scouts have been involved in the development and support of this exhibition through their Challenge and Change program.
Gridley library hosts
storyteller
The Gridley Branch Library will have “extraordinary storytelling” for all ages at 11:30 a.m. June 29 at the grand finale of the 2007 Summer Reading Program.
The guest will be Kansas City storyteller, Jo Ho, who will present “Get a Clue @ Your Library.” According to the news release, guests should bring their “Why’s?” and join globe-trotting “Shirleylock Holmes,” alias Jo Ho, as she tells “mysterious tales of how things came to be and why things are the way they are. Listeners also will participate in the program.
After the program, there will be a free lunch of hot dogs, chips, popsicles and beverages.
“The Flint Hills” in clay
Watermark Books and Café at the corner of Oliver and Douglas in Wichita is featuring a clay and paint exhibit, “The Flint Hills,” by artist Dale Hartley through July 24.
