U-16 Energy goes 2-2 at sub-State

The Emporia U-16 Energy softball team finished in fifth place out of 11 teams at the ASA Sub-State in Garnett, notching a 2-2 record over the weekend.

Emporia started the tournament with a 3-2 loss to the Independence Angels. Emporia led 2-1 in the last inning, but timely hitting allowed Independence to score the two game-winning runs in the final frame.

Hannah Lynch went the distance in the circle, striking out seven. The Energy managed just two hits.

Emporia responded to take a 3-0 victory over the Iola Blast. Cassandra Huth pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out seven and allowing just two hits.

Briana Talkington, Katie Weaver and Huth had two hits each.

The Energy also won its third game, defeating the Paola Fireballs, 11-4. Emporia pounded out 11 hits, led by Lacie Schumann, who had two triples and five RBI.

Lynch took the win in relief.

Emporia lost a heartbreaker in its final game, falling 7-6 to the Garnett Sparks in two extra innings.

Huth pitched the entire game, striking out seven in seven innings.

Schumann contributed three hits, posting a triple, double and two RBI. Lauren Kimble and Huth added two hits each.
