County changes fees

Friday, June 15, 2007

Fee schedules for some county services were changed at the Lyon County Commission’s action meeting on Thursday.

The current fee schedule and the comparable new fee schedule are:

Moving permits, currently $5, new fee, $10; fireworks permits, $0, $50; temporary permits, $0, $5; road vacation, $75, $100; fence viewing, three checks for $7.50, $50 and three checks; notary fee, $2.

“It will enhance revenue just a little bit,” Commission Chairman Marshall Miller said; “not a lot, but a little bit.”

County Clerk Karen Hartenbower said that, because fireworks stand operators already have their merchandise and already are preparing for the holiday, the new schedule will go into effect on July 15 rather than July 1.

An animal-rights organization had tried to intervene in a planned appearance of the Carson & Barnes Circus on Wednesday at the Lyon County Fairgrounds.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter this week to commissioners asking them to ban the use of bullhooks, electric rods and other devices used on elephants.

PETA claimed that Carson & Barnes is a “chronic violator of the federal Animal Welfare Act.”

Miller said that because the circus will perform on Wednesday, there would not have been time for the county to consider a new ordinance nor to have it published as required by state law.

Snake - That's the best thing I have heard for a long time. I really feel that if miller wanted to do something to protect animals, they could at least make a statement that Emporai does care about animals and not allow the circus to set up on county property. But that is just like him, he only cares about himself. I will be glad when we can vote his @00 out of office. But then what about the Lyon County Fairboard and the Kiwanis club or whatever group is bringing the circus to town in the first place. Let's not just blame the commission, If the Kiwanis (or whoever) are really that great, they would have the balls to tell the circus not to come to town in the first place. It's just like the city, not doing anything to protect animals from riding in the back of pickup trucks. Most people do not care about the welfare of helpless animals. But if one of the poor animals were to have enough of the ringmaster crap, and attack someone, the poor animals would be the one blamed and put to death. If you look at it morally, if the circus is allowed to exhibit in emporia and allowed to use bullhooks, electric rods and other devices on elephants while in emporia and lyon county, then is not the governing bodies of emproia & lyon county “chronic violator of the federal Animal Welfare Act.”
