Council Grove Ready for Wah-Shun-Gah

Wednesday, June 13, 2007

Organizers of Wah-Shun-Gah Days in Council Grove have lined up a number of activities and events to celebrate the festival’s 25th anniversary Friday through Sunday.

Entertainment will include a carnival, a car show, rides in Outlaw the Monster Truck, and a flea market, arts and crafts fair.

The main tent in downtown Council Grove will hold continuous entertainment Friday evening through Saturday. It will include Trailside, a country-western band; Past Time, a bluegrass band; the Crossroads barbershop quartet and chorus; and street dances with bands, On Borrowed Time on Friday evening and Silver Bullet on Saturday.

A parade will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, featuring the Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guard from Fort Riley, the Kaw Princess, and Miss Kansas 2007. Long-time Wah-Shun-Gah Days committee worker Rick Sellers will serve as grand marshal for the parade, which — at about 1.5 miles from start to finish — is one of the longest parades in Kansas.

Several acts will return during the weekend: The Kansas City Marching Cobras will perform Saturday evening in the high school gymnasium, as will the Ecuadoran band, Atahualpa, and “Mister Hypnosis,” Mike Reeves.

At the high-school auditorium, 2002 National Yo-Yo Champion Brent Dellingar will share the stage at 1 p.m. Saturday with master juggler Brian Wendling and “The Kid Rock Adventure,” featuring Monte and Michelle Selby.

A full slate of activities are planned at the Kaw Mission. The Kaw Nation will host intertribal pow-wows Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. Tallgrass Express will play for a contra dance, a reception will be held for the Kaw Princess, and Terry Lee Whetstone will play music on a Native American flute before the pow-wow. Native American arts, crafts and jewelry also will be on display.

A tug-of-war, a pizza-eating contest sponsored by Pizza Hut and the Vandeer Creek children’s pedal pull competition are planned on Sunday afternoon.

Food vendors will be in the downtown area throughout the festival.

Admission to the shows can be had by purchasing a button at $6 for adults and $1 for students and children. More information may be had by calling the Chamber of Commerce and Tourism office, (620) 767-5413.
