Emporia Community Foundation announces year’s first round of grants

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

The city of Reading has gotten a $2,000 grant from the Emporia Community Foundation to help improve the town’s civic building.

The grant was the largest of nine announced Monday by the foundation. All together, the foundation awarded $11,717 in grants ranging from $280 to $2,000.

“We are really pleased with the current list,” the foundation’s board president, Ken Buchele, said in a press release.

The work at the Reading civic building will include insulation and new tight-fitting windows. About 20 volunteers will provide the labor.

Other grant recipients were:

• Camp Wood, for archery equipment and a new “walk-through” target sport course.

• The Hometown Learning Center in Hartford, to assist the “Learning Ladder After School Program” for first- through fifth-graders.

• The Lyon County Historical Society, to buy new digital equipment for a mobile Power Point program.

• The Mental Health Center, to buy computers to enhance outpatient treatment given to emotionally disturbed children.

• The North Lyon County Youth Association in Allen to help with building improvements.

• The Emporia Arts Council, for help with Project Quest.

• SOS, to support the Delta Enhancement program to prevent violence and abuse and help children who see it.

• The Emporia National Education Association, for the “Read to Your Bunny” program, which encourages mothers of babies born at Newman hospital to read to their children.

The foundation does two rounds of grants each year. Applications for the second round will be accepted starting Aug. 1 with a deadline of Oct. 1.
