Emporia High track and field coach Randy Wells has been named the Class 5A girls track and field coach of the year for the 2007 season, the Kansas Cross Country and Track and Field Coaches Association announced today.
This past season, the Lady Spartans won the Centennial League title by 8 1/2 points over Junction City (130-122.5) and the Regional title over Bishop Carroll by nearly 100 points (166-78.5).
At State, the EHS girls finished fourth as a team, highlighted by the two State titles from Layne Moore (400, 800) and another title by the 4x400-meter relay team of Heather Coe, Angela Finch, Lindy Arndt and Moore.
Wells will be honored at an awards luncheon on Jan. 5, 2008 in Junction City.
For a full story on Wells’ honor, see Wednesday’s Gazette.

Well he certainly NEVER got FOOTBALL coach of the year!!! There must have not been any other coaches to choose from or else it was just his turn to get it. He was a horrible football coach on and off the field.. To bad he stayed in Emporia to take up space at the Emporia high school.

Hmmmm..... those statistics don't sound like "taking up space." They sound as if he's an excellent track and field coach who inspires his athletes to excel.
In my opinion, coaching is a thankless job. Parents rarely recognize the time and effort coaches put forth. Most parents just want to complain about how their kids are treating, how much playing time they get and why the world is sooooo unfair to little Johnny.
Those are the parents whose kids make the choice not to put forth effort in practice and refuse to hone skills at home. These are the kids who jog off the field or walk down the basketball court on defense because they only want the ball and the glory that comes with sinking the shot.

I think Coach Wells was an awesome coach, so maybe he wasn't that great at coaching football. That doesn't mean that he sucks when it comes to track. Ever since he's taken over the prgram, they have been getting better and better every year. Hell, football just sucks, no matter who coaches, but track has been underappreciated for too long. Good Job Coach Wells!

Randy1,
You obviously have no clue about Randy Wells, he has made Emporia High Track and Field one of the top progams in the state. He has produced many top athletes to go on and persue track and field in college and make names for themselves. The Euler girl at Emporia State, Crystal Cunningham at Truman I think, Layne Moore @ Missouri....just a few of many that come to mind. Both the girls and boys track team finished in the Top 10 at state....find progams that did the same. And yet you're bringing up his football coaching ability? Don't get started on that my friend...don't talk about things you don't have a clue about. PLEASE

I have no opinion on this story but, Mr. Ashford, why doesn't the main "active discussion area" have a place for people to start their own topics?
Thanks,
Melissa
