Birthday reception

Laverna Cox Van Sickle, former resident of Emporia and Reading, will be honored at a reception from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at VFW Post 1980 to celebrate her 90th birthday. Hosts will be her children, Larry Van Sickle, Ron Van Sickle and Mary Leigh Manley.

Out on the porch

The June series of “Readings on the Porch” will begin at 7 p.m. Thursday at the William Allen White House, 927 Exchange St.

“Mary White: In Life and Words” will feature the classic editorial “Mary White” presented by Jim Bartruff of the Emporia State University theater department. The event is free, though donations for the site are accepted.

Seating is limited and participants are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

The porch is handicapped-accessible. In case of rain, the program will be held in the visitor’s center.

Orchestra classes

Summer orchestra classes will begin Monday at Emporia High School. Classes will meet Monday through Thursday. The cost of the two-week session is $40.

The classes will include daily rehearsals and a minimum of one private lesson per week per student.  Students will perform in concert on June 28.
