The Emporia Zoo’s second and final rare coin auction netted $15,862 for the zoo on Saturday.
Between this auction and the one in April, the zoo has raised $32,011. An anonymous donor gave a Rubbermaid tote full of the coins to the zoo late last year.
“I don’t think EFOZ has decided what they’re going to do with the money yet,” said office manager Lori Andrews, referring to the Emporia Friends of the Zoo. “Without knowing what it was going to be, it was kind of hard to decide. The next time they meet in July, they’ll probably have a decision.”
The value of the collection had been conservatively estimated at $12,000 to $15,000. But bidding was spirited Saturday. The highest bid that morning was for an 1894 Morgan dollar, which went for $2,200.
“It was very interesting and exciting,” Andrews said. “The people were all very nice, they had all their information there, they knew what they were waiting to bid on.”
Other notable items included a 1914-D Lincoln cent that went for $1,175 and a 1937-D three-legged buffalo nickel that brought $760.
“It’s been wonderful,” Andrews said.
