Gets scholarship

Gretchen Schreiber, daughter of Mark and Angie Schreiber of Emporia, has received the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities National Scholarship. Schreiber is a 2007 Emporia High School graduate and will be a freshman in the fall at the UMTC in the College of Liberal Arts. The award honors incoming students who have demonstrated exceptional academic performance and leadership.

Houser is honored

The United States Achievement Academy announced today that Clay Houser of Emporia has been named an All-American scholar. The USAA has established the all-American Scholar Award Program to offer deserved recognition to superior students who excel in the academic disciplines. The All-American Scholars must earn a 3.3 or higher grade point average. Only scholars selected by a school instructor, counselor, or other qualified sponsor are accepted.

Houser, a Hartford High School graduate was nominated for this national award by Jane Kelley. Houser will appear in the All-American Scholar Yearbook which is published nationally.

Houser is the son of Don and Angela Houser and the grandson of Darwin and Margie Lehning and the late R..C. and Mildred Houser all of Emporia.

Conley cum laude

Erin Conley was among 511 students who participated in spring commencement exercises April 29, 2007 at Concordia College, Moorhead, Minn. Conley graduated cum laude and is the daughter of Thomas and Mary Conley of Emporia. Conley’s major is English literature honors and her minor is philosophy.

Gets two scholarships

Hallie Kretsinger, a 2007 graduate of Emporia High School has received the Best Buys children’s Foundation $1,500 scholarship and the Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship of $2,500. Hallie is the daughter of Brock and Mary Kretsinger and plans to attend Washington University in St. Louis.

Scholarship recipients were chosen based on community service and academic achievement and must be entering an accredited U.S. university, college or technical school in the fall immediately following their high school graduation.

Purdue graduate

Kathleen Illk graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering on May 12, 2007. Illk is the daughter of Jeff and Debbie Illk of Emporia and Ester Carlson of Solomon.

Completes basic

Army Reserve Private Gabriel Christopher has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

During the 9 weeks of training Christopher studied the history, tradition and core values of the Army. He received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, bayonet training and chemical warfare. He also was instructed in rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, field tactics.

Christopher is an Emporia High School graduate and the son of Teresa Mahoney and John Christopher, both of Emporia.

On dean’s list

Jessica J. Pool of Emporia was named to Baker University’s College of Arts and Sciences dean’s list for maintaining a 3.5 grade-point average during the spring 2007 semester. Pool received a bachelor of arts and sciences degree.

Baker has been listed as one of the top 35 schools in the Midwest in the annual college-ranking by U.S. News & World Report, and selected as a top school in the Midwest by The Princeton Review.
