Q How did the Dual Language students’ mathematics and reading scores compare to the Emporia school district as a whole?
A The Dual Language percentage scores were below overall scores in reading and above in mathematics, according to information from Nancy Horst, community relations director for the school district.
In reading, 64 percent of the Dual Language students scored at “Meets Standards or above.” A total of 78 percent of the all-student group met standards or scored above.
In mathematics, 84 percent of the DL students met standards, compared to 81 percent in the all-students group.
“These scores are for grades three through five,” Horst said.
Dual Language classes are taught only at Riverside Elementary School and Lowther South Intermediate School.
The tests were given to 48 DL students. A total of 423 students were tested in the all-students group and 420 were tested in math.
“We don’t believe we can draw many valid conclusions from the data,” Horst said. “With the small number of Dual Language students tested, the average is easily skewed by one or two students who blow the top off the test or one or two who simply fill in the bubbles at random. Of course, we can say that about any test scores.”
