Xi Epsilon Nu

Golf Scramble

The 2007 Xi Epsilon Nu Four-Person Scramble Golf Tournament will be June 16 at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course. The shotgun start will be at 8:30 a.m. Lunch and hole prizes will be provided. The cost is $65 a person or $260 a team. There also is a player’s party at 7 p.m. June 15 at 402 Merchant St. A taco bar is included with entry fee for player and guest. The proceeds from this year’s golf tournament will benefit the Flint Hills Area SOS Children’s Advocacy Center.

Junior Golf Camp

and Ladies’ Clinic

A Junior Golf Camp for kids age 7 to 17 will be held from 9 a.m. to noon on July 17-19 at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course. The camp will be conducted by Ken Roper, life member of the PGA. Cost is $50.

A Ladies’ Clinic will be held by Roper at 6 p.m. on June 3, 10 and 24 at the Emporia Municipal Golf Course. Cost is $15 per Sunday session.

Hershey Track Meet

The local Hershey Track and Field meet for girls and boys between the ages of 9 and 14 will be held Thursday, June 14 at the Zola Witten Track at Emporia State’s Welch Stadium. The meet begins at 9 a.m., but participants need to show up at 8:30 to register.

Olpe Little Eagle

Basketball Camp

The Olpe Little Eagle Basketball Camp for girls and boys from kindergarten through third grade will take place from 10:30 a.m. through noon on July 9-11 at Olpe High School. Cost is $35, and each child will receive a basketball with enrollment fee.

Camp instruction will introduce the correct individual fundamental skills of basketball in a non-competitive environment. Among the coaches will be Olpe head coach Jesse Nelson, current Lady Eagle players and also Emporia State All-American Michelle Stueve.

Deadline for registration is June 30.

Olpe Fun-damental

Basketball Camps

The Olpe Fun-damental camp for girls and boys from third through sixth grades will take place June 25-28 at Olpe High School. Olpe boys coach Chris Schmidt will oversee the camp, which will help teach the fundamentals of basketball to each individual.

The third- and fourth-graders’ session will be from 9-11 a.m., while the fifth- and sixth-graders’ session will be from noon to 3 p.m.

Cost is $35 for third- and fourth-graders and $45 for fifth- and sixth-graders. A T-shirt is included with the fee.

Deadline for registration is June 20.

Summer Spartan

Volleyball Camps

Applications are now being accepted for the Spartan Volleyball Camps to be held this summer.

Spartan Volleyball Camp is open to all future volleyball players regardless of previous experience. The camp will involve teaching the basic fundamentals of the sport including: serving, passing, setting, attacking and defense. Campers in the K-3rd grade camp and the 4th-6th grade camp will play on lowered nets and with light-weight volleyballs/beach balls.

The camps will be directed by Kendra Bloomquist, head volleyball coach at Emporia High. Current and former EHS volleyball players will be on hand to assist with the camp.

The K-third grade camp will be 9:30-11 a.m. on June 25-28 in the EHS gymnasium, while the fourth-sixth grade camp will be from 9:30-11:30 a.m. on June 25-28. The cost is $30, which included a camp T-shirt. Make checks payable to Kendra Bloomquist.

The seventh- and eighth-grade camp will be from 5-7:30 p.m. in the EHS gymnasium. Cost is $35, which includes a camp T-shirt. Make checks payable to Kendra Bloomquist.

Camp of Champions

Emporia State head women’s basketball coach Brandon Schneider will be conducting three more Camp of Champions basketball camps for both girls and boys grades kindergarten-12 this summer. ESU assistants Ali Sprague and Jory Collins, as well as ESU players and local high school and junior college coaches also will be coaching at the camp.

Camps will be held in Emporia on June 18-21, Parsons on June 25-28 and Holton on July 16-18. The cost of the camp varies by location: Emporia is $125, Parsons is $125 and Holton is $100. Fees include instruction, camp basketball, camp T-shirt and secondary accident insurance.

The camp schedule begins with registration from 8:30-9 a.m. on the first day of each session. Then, from 9 a.m. to noon, campers will be taught individual instruction with ball handling, shooting, fundamentals and defense. After an hour lunch break, campers will return for more individual instruction plus shooting competitions and 3-on-3 and 5-on-5 games from 1-4 p.m.

Applications for Emporia are due on June 8, for Parsons on June 15 and for Holton on July 6.

Summer Spartans

Wrestling Instruction

Emporia High wrestling coach Greg Buckbee will begin the Summer Spartans Wrestling Instruction camps soon. Come learn the technique and attitude that has made Emporia High a perennial power in Kansas.

Throughout the summer, participants will learn from the Emporia High coaching staff and EHS alumni, with current Emporia High wrestlers on hand for the younger wrestlers.

There will be 10-12 sessions throughout the summer in the Emporia High School wrestling room mostly on Tuesday nights starting May 29. A complete schedule will be available on the first night.

Grades 1-6 (as of fall 2007) will be from 6-7:30 p.m. For USD 253 students, the cost is $25, and for non-USD 253 students, $40. Grades 7-12 (as of fall 2007) will be from 7:30-9 p.m. For USD 253 students, the cost is $10, and for non-USD 253 students, $25.

Emporia Aquatic Club summer season

The summer swim season for the Emporia Aquatic Club has begun Tuesday at the Jones Aquatic Center pool. The highlight of the season will be a meet in Emporia on July 14-15.

The Emporia Aquatic Club is a multi-age group to help swimmers develop and refine their competitive swimming skills. Morning practices will be held from 7-8:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, and evening practices will be held from 6:30-8 p.m., Monday through Thursday.

Track Club seeking

The Emporia Track Club is a non-profit organization that provides track and field/running opportunities for all ages with an emphasis on youth. The focus is on instructional learning and enjoyment of the sport. The Emporia Track Club sponsors youth meets in track and field and cross country, fun runs and conducts youth clinics. The track club also has competitors travel to regional and national meets to compete successfully at the highest level.

Designed for competitive athletes who desire to compete in out-of-town USATF competition, the club is open to grades 1-12 at the middle school track. Practices are on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7 p.m. for grades 1-8, and for grades 9-12, the club will practice Monday through Thursday at 7 p.m. on the middle school track.

Emporia summer

Registration is now being accepted for the Emporia Basketball Summer Camps and Emporia Basketball Summer Leagues held at Emporia High School and coordinated by EHS boys basketball coach Rick Bloomquist.

There are nine different programs to choose from ranging from the Shooter Extreme Mini Camp to the Summer League.
