Several more area 8-Man football players have been selected to the 8-Man Division-I All-Star game to be played Saturday in Beloit.
Flinthills’ Jimmy Michal, Hartford’s Andrew Weiderholt, Madison’s Jordan Stout and Jacob Stewart, Marais des Cygnes Valley’s David Becker and Waverly’s Matt Coursen and Heath Redding join Lebo’s Bryant Linsey and Taylor Barker on the Division-I East squad.
All the area players named to the squad represent schools in the Lyon County League.
Michal is projected as a defensive back on the East roster after playing both wide receiver and defensive back for Flinthills in 2006.
Weiderholt will participate in the game at linebacker, where he starred for the Jaguars during their 6-3 2006 campaign. Weiderholt earned All-Area honors from The Gazette as a punter following the season.
Stout was one of the top players in the area this past season as the quarterback for Madison, and he will try to showcase those skills at quarterback during the game. Stout earned All-Area honors as a defensive back last season.
Stout will be joined by teammate Jacob Stewart as an offensive end, which is basically the equivalent of a tight end.
Marais des Cygnes Valley’s Becker, an All-Area offensive lineman, will play the same position during the All-Star game.
Two-time Gazette All-Area player of the year and first-team All-State selection Matt Coursen will headline the running back position for the East squad. Coursen rushed for 1,523 yards and 27 touchdowns in 2006 to go along with 533 receiving yards and 12 touchdown receptions for the State-champion Bulldogs.
Coursen will be joined by fellow Bulldog and All-Area selection Heath Redding, who earned a spot on the squad as an offensive end.
In all, the Lyon County League players named to the All-Star game make up nearly half of the East squad roster (nine of 20).
The 8-Man Division-I All-Star game will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in Beloit.
