A firefighter works to knock down parts of a house that are still smoking. A house fire at 528 S. Market St. sent a youth to the hospital Wednesday evening.

A fire at 528 S. Market St. sent one child to the hospital with possible smoke inhalation and burns Wednesday afternoon.

Trenton Ruggiero, 3, was taken by ambulance to Newman Regional Health. He was later transfered to a Wichita hospital.

The Emporia Fire Department was called to the fire at 2:50 p.m., said Fire Chief Jack Taylor. At 3:30 p.m., firefighters were ventilating the home, putting out hot spots and knocking charred wood out of a bedroom window. High winds blew ashes and smoke down the street, which was blocked off to traffic.

β€œIt appears the fire started in the bedroom,” Taylor said, adding that was preliminary information.

Taylor said there was smoke and heat damage through the home but it was too early to tell exactly how much damage. Three pets β€” a dog, a cat and a ferret β€” died in the fire.

The house is owned by Mauricio Lara of Emporia.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to Tom Andrews, fire marshal.
