OVER THE PAST several months, we have been updating readers on the Corner House’s goal to raise money for a new drug and alcohol recovery center.
The Corner House does not receive much publicity because it doesn’t have a sign out front or advertise what it does. But it fills an important role in our community.
For more than 30 years, the Corner House has helped 3,500 people get back on their feet after fighting drug and alcohol problems. Last year, Corner House helped 160 people — 60 percent of them younger than 30.
Drug and alcohol addictions can wreck homes and families. Substance abuse has increased dramatically over the years. Whether they want to admit it or not, almost every family has probably been affected by someone who has or had a drug or alcohol problem.
Although no one likes to talk about these issues, that does not mean that we should not try to help.
The group needs to raise $92,000 in 24 days to meet the deadline for a challenge grant. Jones Trust and the Mabee Foundation will give Corner House $450,000 if our community will donate the remaining money.
