County gets furniture windfall

Chairs, tables, more are federal surplus

Jeanne Turner, clerk of the district court, points out the office furniture the county received from Government Surplus Tuesday morning.

Lyon County got more than $50,000 worth of office equipment Tuesday, and all it cost was the price of hiring a moving truck and driver — $1,200.

Lyon County employees moved the government-surplus office equipment out of a 48-foot truck on Tuesday morning at the former Deer Trail building, 2632 W. Highway 50. The building was purchased by the county and is being used as a warehouse.

Jeanne Turner, clerk of the district court, said the county received a phone call from Government Surplus, which offers surplus federal equipment to state agencies. Some IRS buildings in Kansas City were being cleared out and the office furniture was being given away. All the county had to do was come and pick it up, Turner said.

Several rows of chairs sit in storage at the old deer trail implement building. 185 chairs were given to Lyon County from Government Surplus.

“It looks like new,” Turner said, pointing to row after row of office chairs, many of which still have tags and instructions on them.

Lyon County picked up 185 office chairs; 14 training tables, 10 three-drawer lateral file cabinets, nine four-drawer office lateral file cabinets, two five-drawer office tables, four desks, five shelving units, one utility cart, one large white board and one small white board. Turner added that she even got markers for the white boards that had been left behind.

“The only thing is, the chairs will need to be cleaned,” Turner said. The chairs will be steam cleaned before they are distributed to departments.

Several county departments will benefit from the free furniture, including the Lyon County Extension office, the appraiser’s office, county counselor, data processing, county clerk, district court and court services.
