MIAA school representatives have voted to approve the University of Nebraska-Omaha for membership to the conference, effective for the 2008-09 academic year.
The vote took place during the league’s Spring Meetings, which concluded Friday in Kansas City, Mo.
The matter will now move to the conference’s Chief Executive Officer’s Council for ratification. That council will meet on June 22.
UNO, which was founded in 1908, has an enrollment of more than 14,000 students. The Mavericks have a 15-sport athletic program and have been members of the North Central Conference since 1977.
Emporia State would be renewing an old rivalry if UNO was allowed into the MIAA.
Nebraska-Omaha, along with Pittsburg State, Fort Hays State and Washburn, were all members of the Central Intercollegiate Conference from 1959-68. They later formed the Plains Division of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference from 1968-72 and the Great Plains Athletic Conference from 1972-73.
