Summer Spartan

Volleyball Camps

Applications are now being accepted for the Spartan Volleyball Camps to be held this summer.

Spartan Volleyball Camp is open to all future volleyball players regardless of previous experience. The camp will involve teaching the basic fundamentals of the sport including: serving, passing, setting, attacking and defense. These skills will be taught in a step-by-step manner and applied in team drills and competitions. It will provide a solid foundation for beginning players and help fine-tune those with a year of playing experience.

Campers in the K-3rd grade camp and the 4th-6th grade camp will play on lowered nets and with light-weight volleyballs/beach balls.

The camps will be directed by Kendra Bloomquist, head volleyball coach at Emporia High. Current and former EHS volleyball players will be on hand to assist with the camp.

The K-3rd grade camp will be 9:30-11 a.m. on June 25-28 in the EHS gymnasium, while the 4th-6th grade camp will be from 9:30-11:30 a.m. on June 25-28. The cost is $30, which included a camp T-shirt. Make checks payable to Kendra Bloomquist.

The 7th and 8th grade camp will be from 5-7:30 p.m. in the EHS gymnasium. Cost is $35, which includes a camp T-shirt. Make checks payable to Kendra Bloomquist.

For more information, contact Kendra Bloomquist at 342-5185.

Summer Spartans

Wrestling Instruction

Emporia High wrestling coach Greg Buckbee will begin the Summer Spartans Wrestling Instruction camps soon. Come learn the technique and attitude that has made Emporia High a perennial power in Kansas.

Throughout the summer, participants will learn from the Emporia High coaching staff and EHS alumni, with current Emporia High wrestlers on hand for the younger wrestlers.

Emphasis will be placed on technique and drills for all three Wrestling positions: In the neutral position, learn to score when you shoot or when your opponent shoots with a unique counter-offense; in the top position, learn to break and pin your opponent with various techniques, including the famous Spartan cross face series; and in the bottom position, learn the technique and attitude so no one can hold you down.

Discussions on mat awareness, gaining a mental edge and other topics also will take place. Participants will have the opportunity to test their new skills in live wrestling situations.

There will be 10-12 sessions throughout the summer in the Emporia High School wrestling room mostly on Tuesday nights starting May 29. A complete schedule will be available on the first night.

Grades 1-6 (as of fall 2007) will be from 6-7:30 p.m. For USD 253 students, the cost is $25, and for non-USD 253 students, $40. Grades 7-12 (as of fall 2007) will be from 7:30-9 p.m. For USD 253 students, the cost is $10, and for non-USD 253 students, $25.

A complete registration form and fees are due on or before the first session. For questions, contact Greg Buckbee by phone at 340-0672 or e-mail at gbuckbee@usd253.org.
