Get on your tractor. Pedal like mad. Get a “full pull” all the way to the line.
That’s how youngsters took control Sunday during the annual Kids Pedal Tractor Pull at the Lyon County Free Fair.
The concrete slab in the show arena was packed with children and parents eager to participate and watch the state-sanctioned event.
John Coates, 6, knows how the tractor pull is done. He pulled his pedal-powered tractor trailer to the end of the line and landed himself a place in the state competition for the second year in a row.
The state competition takes place in Hutchison during the Kansas State Fair.
“It’s fun,” John said.
His father, Don Coates, said the state event is held on grass instead of concrete, but that doesn’t seem to affect the kids.
“It’s a bit overwhelming,” Coates said. “There are so many kids.”
Coates said he likes the tractor pull because it gives the children something to do.
“They can be proud of themselves,” he said.
Kara Horton, 9, said she’s been in the tractor pull for three years.
“It’s fun,” Kara said, adding that to win you just pull the trailer over the line.
Josh Brecht, 10, has competed in the tractor pull for about five years. He said the fun is winning.
“You have to pedal 30 feet with weights on,” Brecht said.
Brecht’s determination must be working because he said he makes it to the line every time.
