Library closed Friday
The Emporia Public Library will be closed Friday for the library’s annual maintenance day. No materials will be due that day, but patrons may return materials in one of the two book drops outside the building. One is in the east parking lot and the other is in the parking lot directly behind the library on the north side. The library will reopen at 9 a.m. Saturday.
Open house
There will be an open house for Olma Peak’s birthday from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at Emporia Livestock Sales. Peak owned and operated the business for 66 years.
Leadership class open
The Emporia Area Chamber & Visitors Bureau is seeking applicants for the 20th Leadership Emporia class. Applications are available at the Chamber office, 719 Commercial St., or online at the Chamber Web site, www.emporiakschamber.org. Nominations may be made by phone at 342-1600. Candidates’ names and addresses are needed so applications may be sent to them. The deadline for applications is Aug. 10.

Tag deadline
Tuesday is the last day for people whose last names begin with the letters J, K or L to renew vehicle registration without penalty. Registration may be renewed in the motor vehicle office at the Lyon County Courthouse. The office is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays.
Proof of insurance is required to renew registration.
Republican women
The Santa Fe Trail Republican Women of North Lyon County will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Allen Senior Center. Herbert Parks, Post Commander 389 of Allen, will present the program about Flag Etiquette. The program will precede the business meeting.
