Furry felines fill Anderson Building

Sunday, July 29, 2007

During the 4-H cat show Sunday afternoon, it was all about the fluff as felines filled the Anderson Building, their owners hopeful for a blue ribbon.

Several cages of cats were lined up in the Anderson Building. Some kids waited patiently. Others stood around and tapped their feet or played with their cats. Still others laughed and chased each other around the room. No matter how long the wait, everybody seemed to be having a good time. The cat show was a part of the many events during Sunday afternoon’s Lyon County Free Fair.

Trey Preisner, 8, was patiently waiting his turn in line with his sister, Lakin Preisner, 10. Trey was holding his cat, Pumpkin.

“He likes other cats and he likes to be petted,” Trey said, of Pumpkin.

Trey said to get Pumpkin ready for the show he brushed and fluffed his fur.

“I didn’t give him a bath,” Trey said. “He doesn’t like water.”

“He got a bath by the rain,” Lakin chimed in, with a smile.

Lakin also was showing a cat, a calico named Amy, in the fair.

“She likes people and being petted,” Lakin said. “I found her as a kitten in the barn. She’s had two litters (of her own) already.”

Maranda Scheller, 8, was next to Lakin and Trey cuddling a black cat named Yaya.

“He stays in the house,” Maranda said, as she petted Yaya. “He looks out the window and kills flies and crickets.”

There’s only one problem with Yaya killing flies and crickets — it’s the mess Yaya leaves behind.

“The thing about it is he kills crickets but he doesn’t eat them!” she said.
