The west bound lanes of the 600 block of West Sixth Avenue were blocked off following a fire Sunday afternoon that damaged a home at 618 W. Sixth Ave. All four occupants that were in the home at the time got out safely.
The fire broke out before 1 p.m. Sunday. At 1:15 p.m., fire crews were still on scene venting the home and putting out hot spots. A hole was knocked out of the roof at the back of the home to extinguish the fire.
Daryl Klumpe, acting captain, said the homeowner is Bryn Philavong. The family was cooking fish in the oven and instead of the oven being turned off, a pan of grease was turned on.
“She grabbed the wrong knob and turned the burner on,” Klumpe said. “It burned the bottom of the pan out and set the grease on fire. It was completely accidental.”
Klumpe said the home has heavy smoke and heat damage throughout and the kitchen is pretty much totaled.
“The important thing is they saw the fire and they got out and they called 911,” Klumpe added. “Everybody got out safe.”
