Maggie Hatfield won the 50-meter backstroke and had top-five performances in two other events, leading the Emporia Aquatic Club at the Division-II Championships last weekend in Derby.
Hatfield — who competed in the 10-and-under division despite only being 8 — trimmed 2.98 seconds off her previous best in the 50 back, winning with a Division-I qualifying time of 44.00 seconds.
She dropped .93 of a second in the 50 free to take fifth (39.64) and also had a season-best time in the 100 breast (1:55.90) for a fifth-place showing.
Regan Hastert was the only other Emporia swimmer to medal with a top-eight performance, placing seventh in the 50-meter free.
The 9-year-old took 1.11 seconds off her previous best in the event, finishing in 41.12 seconds.
Hastert posted season-best times in five of her six swims.
Jordan Metz, who also competed in the 10-and-under division, placed highest in the 200 free, where she took 7.51 seconds off her season best to finish 12th (4:34.28).
Katie Scherich, the only other EAC competitor, notched a top-10 finish in the 15-and-over division in the 50 free (32.27).
Hatfield will be the only Emporia swimmer in this weekend’s Division-I Championships in Lenexa.
