Emporian Brent A. Miller, 18, was in fair condition this morning at Via Christi-St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, according to a hospital spokesman. Miller was taken to St. Francis in critical condition after a head-on accident Wednesday morning near Lyons in Rice County.
A Kansas Highway Patrol report stated that Miller was driving a 1998 Toyota passenger car east on U.S. Highway 56 when his vehicle apparently crossed the center line. The accident happened at 7:32 a.m. about two miles west of the McPherson-Rice county line.
A westbound 1999 Plymouth minivan driven by Laura W. Bounds, 50, of Wichita, attempted to avoid the Miller vehicle, but the cars collided head-on. Bounds, who was wearing a seat belt, also was taken to St. Francis. She remains in critical condition.
Miller was not wearing a seat belt, the report stated.
