The Emporia 13-year-old Babe Ruth team finished in third place at State, falling to Independence 23-5 in the consolation bracket final Tuesday at the Trusler Sports Complex.
Emporia ended the tournament with a 3-2 record and improved upon its 1-2 mark at State last year.
“It’s a big accomplishment for these kids,” Emporia coach Joe Silva said. “They knew what it took after getting a taste of State last year, and they showed this year what they could do.”
The high placing at State came in Emporia’s second year of participation in the Cal Ripken/Babe Ruth leagues.
“It’s a really promising thing,” Silva said. “I’m going to have the kids back playing for me next year, and we’re going to look for even better things.”
Lakin took the 13-year-old Babe Ruth title with an 11-10 victory in the championship game Tuesday night.
