Q How many cases of tuberculosis have been recorded in Lyon County during the past five years?
A The breakdown for active cases of tuberculosis from 2002 to date in 2007 is as follows: 2002, 0; 2003, 1; 2004, 1; 2005, 1; 2006, 3; 2007 to date, 2.
The breakdown for latent cases of tuberculosis from 2002 to date in 2007 is: 2002, 22; 2003, 22; 2004, 28; 2005, 65; 2006, 272; 2007 to date, 140.
The statistics were provided by Renee Hively, public health supervisor for the Flint Hills Community Health Center.
Latent tuberculosis can be treated with medication to prevent it from flaring into an active case, according to information provided earlier by FHCHC staff. Medication must be taken daily for nine months for it to be effective, and checks are done intermittently after treatment is completed.
Active tuberculosis can be treated with medication to prevent the patient from infecting others. Anyone with active tuberculosis is required by law to complete the treatment, with a health professional observing every dose of treatment, FHCHC Director Lougene Marsh had said earlier.
People with latent tuberculosis are not required by law to take the medication. Latent tuberculosis can flare into active tuberculosis.
