Americus pool event raises $3,000

Tuesday, July 24, 2007

AMERICUS — Saturday’s event to raise money to save the Americus city pool was a success, attracting more than 200 people and raising $3,000. Still, $15,000 more needs to be raised to meet the $20,000 goal.

Lacie Hamlin of the Save the Pool committee said this morning that after expenses, the $3,000 from the day’s festivities is going to the pool fund.

“That’s pretty good for a day,” Hamlin said.

The total came from raffle tickets, barbecue sales from Iron Hog, an ice cream social, sales from Home Interior Candles and a special night swim, which drew about 100 people. A softball tournament held during the day also added to the total. Hamlin said Tropical Sno and the Lemonade Lady also participated in the event.

Despite a shower that dumped more than an inch of rain on the ice cream social, people were not deterred.

“People stuck around and we sold out of ice cream,” Hamlin said. “I was very impressed by the softball teams that entered and the people that stuck around with the rain.”

Hamlin said some things didn’t go smoothly. Some vandalism occurred Friday night to tents that were set up for the next day’s event.

“Also, out of that profit, expenses were taken out for vandalism,” Hamlin said. “But overall, it was a good event and good turnout.”

Hamlin thanked everyone who helped make the day successful.

“We had so many volunteers between working the event, setting up the tables and tents and bringing the ice cream,” Hamlin said.

Another night swim will be held before summer wanes. Hamlin said the date and time will be announced later.
