Three members of the Emporia Track Club will compete at the United States Track and Field National Junior Olympics this week at Mount San Antonio College in Walnut, Calif.
Jacob Davies will compete in the 800-meter run starting Thursday, Brandon Childs will participate in the high jump beginning Saturday and Asher Delmott will take part in the 2,000-meter steeplechase today and in the 5,000-meter run Thursday.
Davies is the 5A 800-meter state champion, running the fastest time out of Kansas high schools this year. He also ran a personal-record time of 1:55.44 this summer at the National Youth Meet in Chicago and won the USATF Association and Region 9 Meets.
Childs has had an impressive stretch since the end of the high school track season. He won high school Regionals by jumping a school-record 6 feet, 9 inches, and later placed second at State. He won the USATF Association and Region 9 Meets, took the USATF National Youth Championships and was first at the Sunflower Games, clearing 6-8 last weekend.
Delmott won both the Region 9 steeplechase and 5,000-meter runs on the same day. He was fifth a year ago at USATF Nationals in the intermediate steeplechase with a personal-record time of 6:28.68.
All three athletes will participate in the young men’s division.
