AAAs fall in final
regular-season twinbill
The Emporia AAAs dropped a pair of games to the Lawrence Raiders Sunday at Free State High in Lawrence, falling by run-rule in Game One, 9-0, before coming up short in Game Two, 9-6.
In the first game, Emporia could only muster two hits against Lawrence’s pitching, which included starter Caleb Gress, who went four innings and struck out five Emporia batters.
Meanwhile, a triple to lead off the fourth inning sparked Lawrence to a four-run inning that made it 5-0, and the Raiders followed with another four runs in the fifth frame to end the game early.
In Game Two, Emporia’s offense came to life, but it still wasn’t enough to lift the AAAs to victory. Emporia took a 1-0 lead in its half of the second inning before Lawrence posted three runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good.
Emporia managed to get 10 hits in Game Two and rallied late with two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings, but failed to inflict more damage with a bases-loaded situation in the sixth.
Emporia next will enter Zone Tournament play, which begins on Friday.
