Looking China in the Face

Saturday, July 21, 2007

Some travelers are strangers by nature — content to stand on the outside looking in. They visit approved tourist sites, eat in safe restaurants, make no friends and leave no footprints behind.

Former Emporian Laura DeVito is not that sort of traveler at all.

DeVito, the daughter of Raffaele and Myrna DeVito, has traveled extensively in the United States and Europe. Now she is getting to know China.

She is teaching English in Xi’an, China, and using her vacations to travel from one end of the country to the other. She always takes her camera along.

DeVito, who has a background in graphic design, is an excellent photographer. She has the eye to see potential pictures everywhere and the technical skill to capture those pictures. She also seems to have a talent for immersing herself in whatever community she lands in.

DeVito’s photos are available on the Internet to anyone who cares to look. She posts them on the Flickr Web site.

Laura DeVito has given her permission to The Gazette to publish some of her photos — just to let the home folks know what she is up to these days. This week, the pictures are a selection of photos of people she has encountered on her travels in China.

Next week, The Gazette will publish a page of her photos of China and its people at night.
