Joining practice

Former Emporian Dr. Melissa Herrman will be the new physician at the Family Health Center of Morris County in Council Grove, effective Aug. 1. Herrman specializes in family medicine with a special interest in obstetrics, women’s health and preventive medicine.

She was born in Emporia, graduated from Emporia schools, Emporia State University and the University of Kansas School of Medicine. She recently completed a family practice residency at the Cox Health System in Springfield, Mo. At the Cox Family Medicine Residency graduation ceremony, Dr. Herrman received the Professionalsim Award.

She is married to Tate Herrman and they have twin boys, Nicholas and Kyle. She is the daughter of Ken and Rosemary Suchy of Emporia.

Her town recognized

A former Emporian is directly involved in the economic development of Derby, which has been chosen as a “Top Town for Families” by Family Circle magazine. The article was published in the August 2007 issues of the magazine, which was on newsstands July 10.

Derby’s economic development director, Allison Moeding, is the daughter of Jolene and Eugene Ohlman of Emporia. She also was featured in a Wichita Eagle-Beacon story.

The honor came because of Derby’s “schools, efficient public services, growing business opportunities, outstanding parks and recreation programs and positive community spirit,” according to information on Derby’s Web site.

Derby’s population is 21,000.

Chamber honors Mast

State Rep. Peggy Mast of Emporia has been recognized by the Kansas Chamber of Commerce as a Pro-Jobs Legislator during the 2007 legislative session.

A news release from the chamber gave the reasons for the selection of Mast.

“Rep. Mast and all of the chamber’s Pro-Jobs Legislators have distinguished themselves through votes and actions supporting the tenets of free enterprise in order to move Kansas towards becoming the best state in America to do business,” said Terry Leatherman, interim chief executive officer of the organization.

“Rep. Mast has demonstrated a pro-business approach to public policy decisions as well as a behind-the-scenes leadership approach to improving the Kansas business climate.”

The Kansas Chamber of Commerce is a statewide business-advocacy group.
