4th Annual Emporia

Couples Classic

The Fourth Annual Emporia Couples Classic golf tournament will be held Aug. 18-19 at the Emporia Country Club. This fun event features two days of “couple” play, using three different formats of competition.

Space is limited, as the field is limited to just 36 teams, and entrants come from across the state for this tournament. Deadline for entry is Aug. 10.

Saturday’s play will feature nine holes of scramble competition followed by a horserace and concludes with a steak dinner. Sunday will be 18 holes of team competition. Teams will be flighted after Saturday’s play.

For more information or to register, contact Myrna Taunton at mtaunton@cableone.net, or 342-5016.

Host families needed

for tournament

Host families are still needed for this week when the Emporia 13-year-old Babe Ruth baseball team plays host to the State Tournament of Champions.

As teams are eliminated from the tournament, so are host families relieved of their responsibilities.

For more information, contact Amanda Gutierrez at the Emporia Rec Center or Joe Silva at 481-6381.

EHS Spartan Summer Soccer Camp

The Emporia High Spartan Soccer Camp is set to begin July 23, and it is highly recommended all players attend this camp, as it is the official school camp.

Sessions will run each day through July 27 from 10-11:30 a.m., and there is no cost to attend.

This camp will help prepare participants for the fall season and give those participants the advantage of allowing the EHS boys soccer coaching staff to become more knowledgeable with their soccer skills.

Then, from Aug. 13-17, mandatory two-a-day practices begin, starting with a 5:30 a.m. session and following with a 3:15 p.m. session each day.

Players not trying out for soccer until after the first two-a-day practices will not be eligible to play until after the first three games of the high school season. No late sign-ups will be taken after the third day of practice.

For any questions, contact EHS boys soccer head coach Steve Pearson at 343-7774 or at spearson@osprey.net.

Kansas’ ‘Becoming

an Outdoors-Woman’

Kansas’ “Becoming an Outdoors-Woman,” a non-profit, non-membership program sponsored by the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks, will take place Sept. 28-30 at Rock Springs 4H Center outside Junction City.

BOW gives women the chance to learn a variety of outdoor skills, from hunting and archery, to fishing and float tubing, to rappelling and wild game cooking. This year will be no different, with more than 35 classes to choose from.

If the classes aren’t enough, participants can try their hand at knot tying, test their shooting skills with a laser system or go for the Coleman BOW Games during some of the mini-sessions. And the fun doesn’t stop when the sun goes down. What outdoor experience would be complete without star gazing and campfires?

BOW is an educational opportunity that teaches hands-on outdoor skills to adult women in a safe and supportive atmosphere. BOW workshops are designed specifically for women who are beginners, so no experience is necessary.

BOW provides the equipment and supplies. All participants need to bring is their enthusiasm. The cost is $180 for cabins or $175 for tent lodging.

For more information, contact Jami Vonderschmidt at kansasbow@sbcglobal.net, or go to the “education” link at www.kdwp.state.ks.us.
