It’s the moment Harry Potter fans around the world have been waiting for — the release of the final installment of the series by J.K. Rowling, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.”
Friday evening, bookstores in towns across the country will be transformed by muggle mania. Emporia has several offerings for all ages of Potter fans. Although the book doesn’t go on sale until midnight, there will be an abundance of activities leading up to the big moment.

• When: Starts at 5 p.m.
• Activities: Harry Potter trivia and games, kid-friendly “butter beer,” Scene It Harry Potter game, Quidditch video game contest, lounge for parents, poster crafts, KISS 103.1 will have a live remote, bands will play outside, giveaways, costume contest (winner of costume contest gets a free book), Harry Potter movies will play either on an outside wall or on a wall inside the mall, talent show inside the mall (all ages).
Emporia State University’s Memorial Union Bookstore:
• When: 9 p.m. Friday to 1 a.m. Saturday
• Activities: Blow-up obstacle course, Tropical Sno on site, edible magic wand making, create a Harry Potter character, pinata with prizes, make and drink your own potion, Harry Potter trivia, make a dragon egg, Harry Potter spelling bee, Harry Potter Scene It game, magician, pin the horn on the unicorn.
Town Crier block party, 700 block of Commercial Street
• When: Starts at 9 p.m.
• Activities: The Emporia Public Library will have crafts and activities. The Emporia Arts council will have crafts and activities and the Art Mobile. The Emporia Zoo will have owls. L-CAT will have a “spooky bus”. Sweet Granada will have chocolate frogs, slugs. ESB Financial will show a movie. Also sponsored by The Villager and Emporia Main Street.
