Grandparents are Steven and Susan Cates and Alton and Marie Malone of Emporia. The great-grandparents are Helen Zorn and Thelma Cates, both of Claflin, and Lawrence and Eva Malone of Moline.

Eduardo and Carrie Serrano of Emporia are the parents of a son, Kellen Eduardo Tomas Serrano, born July 9, 2007, at Newman Regional Health. Kellen has a sister, Mariah Serrano, and a brother, Derrick Serrano. His other brother, Ryker Lee Serrano, died earlier. Grandparents are Wesley Jones of Emporia and the late Janet Jones. The great-grandparents are Celia Aldape of Eagle Pass, Texas, and the late Jose Aldape, Helen Jones of Wichita and Meryle Yewell of Topeka.
