Honor graduates

Students from this area who were recognized at the University of Kansas University Honors Program held May 19 were Audra Rochelle Jenkins of Admire and Laura Ashleigh McMurray of Burlington. Jenkins graduated from Emporia High School and from KU with a bachelor’s degree in theater and film. She is the daughter of Clayton and Rene Jenkins. McMurray graduated from Burlington High School and from KU with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. She is the daughter of Jim McMurray. Both women completed the University Honors Program and received gold cords to wear during commencement.

Honor society inductees

Erin Hevel of Waverly and Kimberly Doman of Vassar were inducted in May into the Pi Gamma Chapter of Beta Beta Beta, a national biology honor society at Washburn University. Tri-Beta focuses on promoting research and its importance at the undergraduate level. Members also participate in fund-raising and community activities.

Join youth tour

Young people from across Kansas attended the 47th annual Electric Cooperative “Government in Action” Youth Tour in Washington, D.C. from June 7 through June 14. Attending from the Lyon-Coffey electric cooperative were Allen Harkrader and Kate Parker of New Strawn.

Gets scholarship

Jordan Heins, a senior at Northern Heights High School, has received a $1,000 scholarship from FairPoint Communications, which will be paid to Emporia State University where Heins will enroll this fall. Heins was one of 50 students who qualified for the five scholarships. He plans to study biochemistry and molecular biology. He has a 3.9 GPA and was chosen as a Kansas Honors Scholar, Academic All American and National Honor Society member. He also was a Kiwanis Key Leader, a tutor and played football and basketball. He is the son of Terry and Karen Heins of Americus.
