90th birthday

The family request a card shower for Virginia Suddock, who will celebrate her 90th birthday on Sunday. Cards may be sent to her at 2123 W. 23rd Ave., Emporia, KS 66801.

Another card shower

Family and friends are requesting a card shower for former Emporian Dale Shellenberger, who will be 84 on Saturday. Cards may be sent to him at 1408 Cherry St., Cassville, MO 65625.

Democratic picnic

The Lyon County Democratic Committee will have its annual summer picnic from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Emporia Arts Council Center, 618 Mechanic St. Meat and beverages will be provided.

Attendees are asked to take a covered side dish or dessert to share. The event is free of charge. The speaker will be Jim Ward, assistant Democratic Leader of the Kansas House of Representatives. Those who wish to sponsor the picnic may send a check for $50 (any size donation will help the candidates) payable to the Lyon County Democratic Party in care of Barb Jensen, 22311 W. Bayfront Court, Emporia, KS 66801.

Anti-bullying training

Girl Scouts of the Flint Hills will be the host for “Challenge Day” founders Yvonne and Rich Dutra St. John during a three-day intensive anti-bullying training on Aug. 24-26.

The couple will lead 60 participants from the Flint Hills region into the issues of bullying including youth violence, racism, teasing, stereotypes, gender roles, social oppression and the abuse of tobacco, drugs and alcohol.

Wild Women of the Frontier

The Wild Women of the Frontier will hold tryouts for new members with “sign up” closing August 1. According to the press release, this “not-for-profit organization is dedicated to preserving the history of women who lived during the 1800s and early 1900s. Members portray these women and provide education and entertainment with parades, mingling, antics (skits) and arena performances utilizing guns, music and horses to tell about these fabulous women in our history!”
