Weekend accidents claim on life, injure Lebo boy

Monday, July 16, 2007

A high-speed chase ended in death late Saturday night for a 19-year-old Greenwood County woman and an accident in Coffey County Friday sent a Lebo boy to the hospital.

Rachel Ann Yost of Eureka was a passenger on a motorcycle driven by Jacob Wayne Jackson, 23, of Wichita.

According to a report from the Kansas Highway Patrol, Jackson was driving east on U.S. Highway 54 in Eureka when a Greenwood County Sheriff’s officer attempted to stop him. Jackson sped east out of Eureka, pursued by the officer.

Jackson lost control of the motorcycle about seven miles east of Eureka and ran off the highway. He and Yost were thrown from the cycle.

Yost was killed. Jackson was flown from the scene by a Life Team helicopter to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Neither Yost nor Jackson was wearing a helmet. The accident happened at 11:45 p.m. Saturday.

An accident at 4:11 p.m. Friday at Highway K-131 about one mile north of Lebo resulted in hospitalization for a 13-year-old Lebo boy.

Trevor D. White was taken to Coffey County Hospital after the 2007 Nissan Sentra in which he was a passenger was struck by a 2006 Chevrolet 3/4 ton pickup truck driven by James B. Raines, 46, of Overland Park.

The highway patrol report said that Rains had come from the northbound lane of Interstate 35 and was at the bottom of the ramp at K131 when he failed to yield right-of-way to the Sentra and struck it in the right side.

Robert D. White, 42, of Lebo, driver of the car, had possible injuries but was not taken to the hospital by ambulance. Raines was not injured.

All three were wearing seat belts.

A third accident occurred at 12:42 p.m. Saturday on U.S. Highway 75 abut four miles south of I-35 in Coffey County.

A southbound Kenworth truck driven by Jerry J. Rafferty of Marceline, Mo., crossed the centerline and went into the ditch on the northbound side. The truck and its trailer rolled over and came to rest on its side.

Rafferty was taken by ambulance to Coffey County Hospital in Burlington, which had no information on his condition this morning.

Rafferty was wearing a seat belt, according to the highway patrol accident report.
