On dean’s list

Tyler Robinson of Emporia was listed on the Dean’s Honor Roll for the fall semester of 2006 at Garden City Community College. This honor roll includes students with grade point averages of 3.2 to 3.999.

Robinson graduated in May from GCCC, along with Daniel Flick of Emporia.

Academic honors

Sheena N. Walters of Emporia was named to the Spring 2007 Dean’s List of students who attained academic excellence at Missouri State University.

On team that placed

Emma Goff of Emporia, who is studying personal financial planning at Kansas State University, was one of the three team members of the Kansas State University Financial Planning Team which received second place at the national collegiate financial planning competition championship, the Ameriprise Planning Invitational, held April 18-21, in Minneapolis, Minn.

On president’s roll

Nicole Marie-Audrey Kaysing of Emporia was one of 270 students on the President’s Honor Roll for the spring 2007 semester at Missouri Western State University at St. Joseph, Mo. Students who have taken 12 hours or more for graded credit and have earned a grade point average of 4.0 qualify for the honor.

In honor society

Johanna “Hanna” Peterson of Emporia was inducted in May into the Pi Gamma Chapter of Beta Beta Beta, a national biology honor society at Washburn University. Tri-Beta focuses on promoting research and its importance at the undergraduate level. Members also take part in fund-raising and community service.

To Hastings College

Colter Keck of Emporia received art and academic scholarships to attend Hastings College in Hastings, Neb., for the 2007-08 academic years. Colter, son of Alan and Linda Keck, graduated from Emporia High School and plans to study art. Hastings College, founded in 1882, is a private, four-year liberal arts institution affiliated with the Presbyterian Church.

Rinker 4-H Club

The May meeting of the Rinker 4-H Club was called to order by president Carmen Clark. Jessica Hilbish led the flag salute and 4-H pledge. Roll call was “summer vacation plans.” There were 16 members, one leader and 12 parents present. The minutes were read by secretary Morgan Michels. The treasurer report was given by Sandy Brummett; Clark told about the petting zoo and Ambassador day camp. Laura Brashears will have two more foods meetings and announce dates later. Announcements were also made by Deb Ikerd, Clark, Christine Clark and the trips committee. Participants in the canoe trip left June 8. Jessica Hilbish, song leader, led the group in singing and gave a talk about getting the pigs ready for show. Megan Hilbish talked about clothing construction and Morgan Michels led the Life Saver game. The birthday song was sung to vice president Taylor Lee. Refreshments were provided by the Michels, Brummetts and Prose families. Callie Clark moved to adjourn the meeting and it was seconded by Cole Prose. The next meeting, junior officers night, was held June 18.

Dance teams at camp

The Emporia High School Varsity and Junior Varsity Dance teams recently attended the National Dance Alliance summer dance camp at Emporia State University along with 300 dancers from the surrounding states. The dancers received these awards at the summer camp: Varsity and Junior Varsity received the Spirit Pom; Varsity Small Group received an Excellent rating for Home Routine; Varsity received a Superior rating for Home Routine; and for Home Routine, Junior Varsity received an Outstanding rating; Varsity received an Excellent rating for Team Dance and Junior Varsity, an Outstanding rating for Team Dance; Junior Varsity received a Most Improved Technique award; and both squads received bids to Nationals. Kylie Miller was the All-American nominee.
