New USD 386 board members Jeff Williams, Julie Buster and Sharon Hudson were sworn into office on July 2 at the board’s regular meeting.
The Madison News reported that Gale Schroeder was elected board president and Gena Ott was elected vice-president.
First Community Bank was accepted as the official financial depositor for the 2007-2008 school year.
Burlington
Plans are being finalized for Burlington’s sesquicentennial celebration.
The Coffey County Republican reported that the city of Burlington will celebrate its 150th anniversary during homecoming weekend — Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21 and 22. The city’s birthday party will kick off with a tailgate party prior to the high school football game on Sept. 21. A full line of events is scheduled for Sept. 22.
Burlington
The Burlington Police Department has been awarded a $10,400 Bryne Memorial Justice Grant, which will allow the department to upgrade technology-related equipment.
The Coffey County Republican reported that Burlington Police Chief Doug Jones told the city council during a recent meeting that the grant is a 75/25 matching grant; the state will provide $7,800 while the city must fund $2,600.
Cottonwood Falls
The Chase County Board of County Commissioners conducted a walk-through of the Chase County Courthouse during Monday’s meeting.
The Chase County Leader-News reported that the board was viewing the asbestos removal work completed by Associated Insulation at the courthouse. The completion of the removal opens up the building for other renovation work.
