After Day One of the young women’s heptathlon at the Region 9 USATF Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships in Edwardsville, Ill., Emporia Track Club member Leslie Stanbrough is in second place with 2,158 points.
Stanbrough won the high jump and the shot put to help vault her near the top of the standings after the first day, and she is just 13 points out of first, as Jasmine Duckworth of the University City Explosion leads the event with 2,171 points.
The event continues today.
Stanbrough finished fifth in the heptathlon at the National USATF Junior Olympics in 2004 in Eugene, Ore., but has not competed in a heptathlon in three years because of an injury.
Several other ETC members will compete this weekend: Brandon Childs and Kale Hamm in the high jump, Asher Delmott in the 5,000-meter run and the 2,000-meter steeplechase, Andrew Wayman in the 2,000-meter steeplechase, Callie Clark in the 200- and 400-meter dashes and also the high jump, and Jacob Davies in the 800-meter run.
