Pats on the Back

Friday, July 13, 2007

Each Friday, The Gazette salutes those who make Emporia and the surrounding area a better place to live and work. The following folks deserve a pat on the back ...

BARRY MUNINGER, who won the city golf championship, after disqualifying himself from the tournament last year when he found he had one club too many in his bag and told officials. Honesty like that is a prize in itself — but it’s nice to see him get the trophy, too.

• Everyone who had a good time at the Lucky U’s first flea market last weekend. The event drew a number of customers, including some from as far as California. Want to try it again?

• Brandon Childs and Michaela Reynolds of the Emporia Track Club, who both claimed national youth championships in a

tournament at Lisle, Ill. Reynolds won the 2,000 meter

steeplechase while Childs won the young men’s high jump.

• The servers at Montana Mike’s restaurant who donated all their tips Tuesday to help a former co-worker, Cameron Lindow. Lindow broke her neck when she and others jumped off a short bridge into the river where they had been canoeing. The funds will help cover some of her medical costs.

• Everyone who decided to have a little fun on 7-7-07, including newlywed couple Jennifer Grider and Michael Langley. Hope the day proved lucky for you.

• The Emporia Farmers Market, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. Things just keep cropping up.

• Dave Stormont, who volunteered to take pictures of adoptable children for “Klicks For Kids,” a program of the Kansas Children’s Service League. Photographers across the state are taking pictures of the children in hopes of helping them find adoptive families. Photos can be seen at www.kcsl.org and will be on

display at the Flinthills Mall from Sept. 19 to 26.

• Dave Markowitz, the Emporia Baseball Club and everyone else who was involved in the nearly finished improvements to the Soden’s Grove ballfield. Now we really don’t care if we never get back.
