Tech meets teaching at ESU event

Thursday, July 12, 2007

Digital literacy, school library media programs and learning in an information-rich world were the focus of a two-day institute held on the Emporia State University campus, atthe Jones Conference Center for Educational Excellence.

Through a combination of lecture and “how-to” sessions on topics such as blogs, wikis and podcasting, 120 participants learned from David Warlick how technology can help library media specialists, technologists, and classroom teachers come together in helping students learn. Authors Susan Stevens Crummel and Sharon Draper shared ways to use literature to improve students’ reading, writing, and research skills.

Warlick has taught for 30 years and is a staff consultant with the North Carolina State Department of Public Instruction. His Web site, “Landmarks for Schools,” gets more than ten million visits a month. Warlick has also written three books on instructional technology and 21st-century literacy and has spoken to audiences throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia, and South America.

Susan Stevens Crummel has taught mathematics for 31 years and is an an award-winning picture book author. Sharon Draper is a young adult author, poet and a National Teacher of the Year. She has won many awards including the Coretta Scott King Award and several honors from the American Library Association and the International Reading Association.

Session instructors also included Northeast Kansas Library System technologists Brenda Hough, Heather Braum and Liz Rae; and Janet Holland, ESU’s instructional design and technology instructor.

Emporia High School librarian Carmaine Ternes and ESU archivist Heather Wade hosted evening library tours and discussions of collections and facilities.
