Benefit dance Saturday

A dance to benefit the Shrine Hospital will be from 3 p.m. to midnight Saturday at the Eagles, 1130 E. Ninth Ave. There will be live bands, karaoke hors d’oeuvres.

The cost of the dance is $30 for couples and $20 for singles.

Ice cream social at Dunlap

The Dunlap United Methodist Women will have an ices cream social beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday in the church fellowship hall. There will be various flavors of homemade ice cream, pie and cakes and tea.

The event will include a country store with a bake shop, crafts and garden produce.

Donations will be used for UMW projects in the church and the community.

Register now for relay

The American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Lyon County is registering teams for the Sept. 7-8 event. To register a team, call Tara Dodd at 342-1364 or attend the team captain kick-off party from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Newman School of Nursing, 1201 W. 12th Ave.

This year, the party theme is “Big Top, Big Cure.”

The Relay for Life is an overnight event that “mobilizes communities throughout the country to celebrate survivors, remember loved ones and raise money for the fight against cancer,” said a news release. Survivors and current cancer patients, their families, businesses, civic organizations and the public are invited to take part.

The event will be held from 6 p.m. Sept. 7 to 6 a.m. Sept. 8 at the Emporia High School track. According to the news release, the money raised by participants goes directly to the American Cancer Society’s programs. In 2006, $70,000 was raised; this year’s goal is $80,000.
