A-16s drop 2 against Manhattan

Tuesday, July 10, 2007

The Emporia A-16s had a rough go of it Monday night, falling 12-3 and 8-0 to defending A State champion Manhattan Manko in Manhattan.

“They found a lot of holes, and we didn’t handle the baseball that well,” Emporia A-16 coach Aaron Lechien said. “You can kind of expect that when you’re not getting on the field a lot.”

The A-16s have played just four official games in the last two weeks.

Emporia posted just three hits in the opening game, as Josh Posey, Dylan Smith and Trevor Turney contributed the three singles.

Meanwhile, Manhattan scored its 12 runs with the benefit of just five hits.

“We’d make an error and walk a guy, and they’d have two runs,” Lechien said. “Before you knew it, that turned into five runs for them.”

Bryan Little took the loss in the five-inning contest.

Emporia mustered just one hit in Game Two on a single by Posey.

“We saw some pretty good arms,” Lechien said. “Those are probably the best arms we’ve seen all season.”

Chase Speer picked up the loss after going four innings on the mound.

The A-16s (9-14) will take on Manhattan Manko again at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Soden’s Grove.
