TODAY
- Today marks the first meeting of the new budget year for the Flint Hills Technical College Board of Trustees. Among its business, the board will look at the year-end financial reports for 2006-2007 and vote to accept an offer on the house built by the school’s construction technology students. The meeting starts at 4 p.m. at the college.
WEDNESDAY
- It’s a long day for the Emporia City Commission, which will begin with an action meeting at 9 a.m. in the city commission chambers at 518 Mechanic St. and follow it up with a 10 p.m. study session at the city conference room, 521 Market St. Among other things, the commission may apply for a state grant to improve local housing. Commissioners will also review the capital improvement plan and see a presentation on storm water utilities. Their lunch meeting this week is with the Emporia Public Library’s board and will be in the library meeting room.
- Need to jazz up the afternoon a bit? Head down to the library’s courtyard for this week’s Brown Bag offering, the annual “Emporia Idol” contest. Audience members will get the chance to decide which musical acts should take top honors and which get to go home with nothing but a sunburn. The contest starts at noon.
- “Live in the Lot” is back after an Independence Day break. The 7:30 p.m. concert at the Seventh Avenue and Merchant Street parking lot will feature the band Between the Lines and the film “Open Season,” an animated film about a grizzly bear and a mule deer that get stranded in the woods during hunting season and try to rally the forest against the hunters. The film is rated PG.
- The Lyon County Planning/Appeals Board meets at 7 p.m. in the county commission chambers of the Lyon County Courthouse. The board’s business will include a review of the comprehensive plan with a focus on urban access corridors. Road U will be included in the discussion since it will soon be paved.
- The Emporia school board has a number of “housekeeping” items on tap as it welcomes its newest members: Angie Schreiber, Glen Strickland and Mike Helbert. Other agenda items include bids for custodial equipment, approval of materials for “Imagine It” and “Corrective Reading” and approval of a variable annuity life insurance agreement for services to the district’s recent retirees.
- Budget requests are coming in thick and fast for the Lyon County Commission, who this week will discuss funding for Emporia Main Street, Corner House, Plumb Place and the extension office, among other study session items. The meeting begins at 8 a.m. Wednesday and will run until 11 a.m. at the county commission chambers in the Lyon County courthouse. A follow-up action meeting is set for 8 a.m. Thursday.
F It’s so nice a day, let’s play two. The Emporia A-16s face Manhattan in a legion baseball doubleheader at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. in Soden’s Grove.
THURSDAY
- With a chance of thunderstorms throughout much of the week, perhaps it’s appropriate that the Emporia Municipal Band’s concert focuses on water music this time out. Pieces include the naval hymn of “Eternal Father, Strong to Save,” as well as “The Swan” by Saint-Saens and selections from “South Pacific.” The concert starts at 8 p.m. in Fremont Park.
- This sounds familiar .... It’s doubleheader time again for legion baseball, this time with the Emporia A-15s playing against Lawrence at Soden’s. Game times are 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
FRIDAY
- It’s out of town, but we’ll mention it anyway: the municipal band hits the road today for a command performance at the Kansas Bandmasters Association convention at the Wichita Marriott Hotel. The band leaves town at 3:30 p.m. and will perform at 7:30 p.m. with a concert that will include the second performance of “Beacon on the Prairie,” a march specially commissioned for the sesquicentennial. Have fun, folks!
