Emporia Track Club member Brandon Childs came away with a national championship in the young men’s high jump Saturday at the 2007 USATF Youth Outdoor National Championships in Lisle, Ill.
The senior-to-be at Emporia High cleared 6 feet, 6 3/4 inches on his second try to defeat Brian Knight and Mykhail Chambers, who each cleared the same height but not until their third attempt.
Childs’ victory gave the Emporia Track Club two national youth champions, as Michaela Reynolds won the 2,000-meter steeplechase earlier last week.
Another senior-to-be at EHS, Jacob Davies, produced a top-10 finish on Saturday, placing sixth in the finals of the young men’s 800-meter run.
Davies, the 2007 Class 5A State champion in the event, finished in a time of 1 minute, 57.04 seconds, while Jamar Jones took first in a time of 1:52.17.
