No retail breaks

SEE the front page of Emporia Gazette on June 28 for article on retail incentives.
At the risk of seeming a bit tedious, I must once again protest the unfairness of shifting taxes to the homeowners. If the city takes in more sales taxes than it needs, why can’t it reduce the sales taxes or the budget it submits?
Homeowners do not get to reduce taxes by coming here or by improving their real estate. Businesses who compete with the newcomer get no tax breaks for improving their property. I got nothing for coming here except a tax bill of over $4,000 a year on my home.
I promise you that I will not spend one dollar with a business which has to have a tax incentive to come here.

Thank you Mr. Robert. My feelings and many others in this town are the same as yours. Why should we pay higher taxes for the company's that can well afford to pay taxes? Many of us are planning on leaving or have already left. There are a couple more companys planning on closing their doors because they have not got the incentives to stay here. Like I have said before in some of my posts I will continue to shop out of town and let someone else get the benefit of my sales tax than to leave it in Emporia, when I get screwed by higher taxes here every single year and this town still has nothing to show for it except a deficiet that no one can figure out?
