Pats on the Back

Friday, July 6, 2007

Each Friday, The Gazette salutes those who make Emporia and the surrounding area a better place to live and work. The following folks deserve a pat on the back ...

AIR FORCE pilot Chad James, who will lead a F-15 flyover at the Pepsi 400 at Daytona. James has been a F-15 pilot since 1999.

- Donors who gave money to the Corner House and helped that agency meet its $1.3 million fund-raising goal. Because Corner House met the goal, it will receive $450,000 in challenge grants. The money will be used to build a new drug and alcohol recovery house in Emporia.

- Emporia Track Club members John Williams, Callie Clark, Leslie Stanbrough, Brandon Childs, Kale Hamm, Asher Delmott, Jacob Davies and Andrew Wayman, who qualified for the Region 9 USATF Junior Olympic Championships in Edwardsville Ill.,

- The Flint Hills Optimist Club, which put on the Fourth of July fireworks display.

- Ted Hollembeak and George Milton, who competed in tennis at the National Senior Olympics. Bob Symmonds competed in racquetball.

- Tim and Heather Bailey and Horizon Plaza Apartments, who won lawn of the month awards from the Emporia Gardeners of America.

- Gwen Alexander, who was named Emporia State University’s dean of the School of Library and Information Management.

- The organizers and volunteers who made Emporia’s 150th birthday celebration a grand success.
