‘Emporia Idol’

The next Brown Bag Concert at the Emporia Public Library will feature the Emporia Idol show, with local singers competing for prizes. To register, call 340-6462. The concerts begin at noon Wednesday, with lunch and snacks sold by Dog Gone Brothers and Sweet Granada. Seating is limited, so participants are advised to bring chairs. In case of rain or heat, events will be held inside.

Storytime

The Emporia Public Library Summer Storytimes for Pat-A-Cake Club and Mother Goose Time storytime theme for the week of July 9th is “Hide and Seek/Peek-a-Boo.” Pat-A-Cake Club is held at 9:15 a.m. on Monday and Thursday mornings for infants to 18 months. Mother Goose Time is held at 9:45 a.m. on Monday and Thursday mornings for toddlers up to 36 months.

The library’s preschool and school-age storytime theme for the week of July 9th is “Whodunit?” Preschool storytime is Monday and Thursday morning at 10:30 a.m., and on Tuesday morning at 9:30 a.m. for ages 2 to 5. School-age storytime is Tuesday morning at 10:30 a.m. for ages 5 to 11.

Finally, from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, the library is hosting “Solve It: Puzzles and Codes.” This program will have all kinds of puzzles and codes for detectives of all ages to solve. Join us for this fun-filled time to sharpen your detective skills.

The really wild West

The Young Thespian Players will perform “The Wild, Wild, Wildest West” on July 12, 13 and 14 at the Emporia Arts Council, 618 Mechanic St. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. all three days and there is also a 2 p.m. matinee on July 14. Tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for kids.

The melodrama is the biggest production the YTP has yet mounted, with 33 children in the cast. Selections from the show were performed during Wednesday’s sesquicentennial street fair.

Book talk

The Kansas Connections 2007 Book Discussion Series continues at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Emporia Public Library large meeting room with a discussion of “The Last Cattle Drive” by Robert Day. Multiple copies of the book will be available for checkout. The remaining books to be discussed and dates are “Kansas Troubles” by Earlene Fowler, Aug. 1; “The Center of Everything” by Laura Moriarty, Sept. 5; “A Breed Apart” by Max McCoy; “Virgin of Small Plains” by Nancy Pickard, Nov. 7; and “The Persian Pickle Club” by Sandra Dallas, Dec. 5. Vocal recital

Alena Starr, soprano, will give a vocal recital at 7:30 p.m. July 14 in Heath Recital Hall at Beach Music Hall on the Emporia State University campus. There is no charge.

Starr will be assisted by pianist Diane McCarty, members of the Starr family and others. The concert will include classical selections, excerpts from musicals and jazz.

Making an impression

“American Impressionism and the Art Colony Experience,” a lecture by Novelen e Ross will be given at 2 p.m. July 22 at the Wichita Art Museum.
